Darío Barrio has been immersed in the world of cooking since he was 14 years old. He managed to carve out a niche for himself in this profession and currently combines it with his hobby: enjoying adventure sports.
His great specialty is B.A.S.E. Jumping. and we were able to see how well he performs in this practice doing exhibition jumps at the World Championship of Salto B.A.S.E., held a few days ago in Benidorm. Darío tells us how he feels practicing this sport and does not hesitate to share his experience with us.
Yumping.- Chef by profession, how did you decide on the world of base jumping?
Darío Barrio.- I have always been a lover of outdoor sports and I am an adrenaline addict, so B.A.S.E jumping. It was the logical evolution to skydiving. Manolo Chana, the B.A.S.E. most charismatic jumpers, he has been my mentor.
Y.- To be able to dedicate yourself to this type of skydiving, you must previously have a lot of experience as a skydiver. Why did you decide to take a step further?
D.B.- I started skydiving in '95 and the jump (pun intended) to B.A.S.E. It was inevitable.
Y.- Do you practice or have you practiced other adventure sports?
D.B.- Yes, of course. I practice free flight in hang glider, the canoeing in white water, when I can I do some diving... Triathlon also gives me good feelings, but without doubt the B.A.S.E. It's the most.
Y.- Do you think extreme sports are engaging?
D.B.- It's not that I believe it, I affirm it categorically. Adrenaline asks for more adrenaline.
Y.- Where do you rehearse this type of jumps?
D.B.- I'm going with my friend Armein to the different points in Spain. It is also time to travel to other places internationally, such as Lauterbrunnen (Switzerland), Brento (Italy), Stavanger (Norway), Angel Falls (Venezuela)... And ultimately, in all those places where there are bridges , antennas and buildings over 60 meters (laughs).
Y.- Of the four places where Base Jump is practiced (buildings, antennas, bridges or land), Where do you feel most comfortable?
D.B.- Every jump is special, very special. But if I had to choose the earth jump (from land, that is, cliffs, ravines, etc.) it is the most magical because of the brutal contact you have with nature.
An example is the jump from the waterfall at Angel Falls in Venezuela, where it was not just the jump, but also being able to share an expedition with the members of Alas Project.
And.- To what extent do you think there is risk in this sport?
D.B.- It is a discipline that leaves no room for errors. There is no plan B, everything, everything, has to be carefully calculated.

Y.- What goes through your mind in the seconds before the jump?
D.B.- Many things go through your head. You are afraid and you ask yourself: "but what am I doing here?" But then you realize that you enjoy and live that fear. You wouldn't change that jump for the world. Jumping makes you feel alive.
Y.- Base jumping or skydiving?
D.B.- Without hesitation: B.A.S.E. jump.
Y.- We saw you jump in the World Championship at the Hotel Bali in Benidorm, since Yumping.com was one of the sponsors. If the sensation of seeing you jump is already inexplicable, we suppose that it is even more so to express what it feels like to jump into the void. Could you tell us?
D.B.- There are many sensations and very strong. You're right, it's very difficult to explain, because while I don't notice how the blood flows through my veins and makes me feel alive, it also gives me a feeling of peace and freedom. Experiment to prove that there is life before death.
Y.- How do you combine your restaurant "Dassa Bassa" with the cooking program and the practice of extreme sports?
D.B.- I have proven that leaving the restaurant and practicing my hobbies makes me more creative and productive in addition to improving my relationship with my colleagues.
My wife encourages the practice of my hobbies because I release adrenaline and she knows that it makes me happy.

And.- Today, is there anything you don't dare to do?
D.B.- Yes, I would never dare to waste my time.
And.- What is your next big challenge?
D.B.- This summer I jumped from Mount Eiger in Switzerland. It is a 1,800 meter wall.
Y.- How far would you like to go in the world of adventure sports?
D.B.- For this question there is a common phrase: "have fun be safe and soft landing."
