surfing is a water sport in which the waves are the best scenario and the table your best ally. In the last century, followers have multiplied and currently, the most striking thing is riding big waves, doing all kinds of maneuvers, competitions and even new modalities have been developed, such as the paddle surf.
Have you ever surfed? If you have done it, you will know that there are different models of boards that you can choose based on your level and the conditions of the environment, and if not, it is time to know the typology!
The most important thing, of course, is to choose a good surfboard. It will guarantee you the safety you need: maneuverability, balance, flotation... Especially if you are just starting out, choose calm waters for your beginnings and start paddling, sitting on the board and lying on it. From there you will connect with the waves and little by little you will be able to stand up.
Each surfboard is intended for a different type of surfing, so you will have to choose the one that catches your attention the most and dedicate yourself to it. The type of wave and the levels also have a lot to do with this variety. There are two large groups depending on the size and type of the table:
- Shortborard: for surfing with a short board (from 1.50 meters to 2.10 meters). It is suitable for all types of waves but you will have to have experience to use it correctly.
- Longboard: With this type of board, surfing was born in the '50s and '60s (measurement equal to or greater than 2.75 meters). Use it if you are going to encounter small waves (or big ones if you are experienced) and do all the maneuvers you can with it.
Now, the models within these divisions are very diverse:
- Tow-in: you will need a lot of practice to master this board and a medium-high level. They are very narrow boards as well as small and your feet will be glued to them at all times, guaranteeing stability during practice. Of course, you have to be towed by a jet ski.
- Fish: they are designed especially for times when the waves are not very good, with small waves with little force predominating. It is a type of board thick so it facilitates buoyancy and paddling.
- Retro: similar to the fish but with strange shapes, since it is inspired by the surf of the 70s. Ideal if you are going to enjoy a calm wave, although you will have to have a medium level to be able to get it.
- Gun: aimed at surfing the largest waves and with an ideal size to gain speed while maintaining balance. The best thing for you to dare with this type of surfboard is that you have a high level.
- Stand Paddle Board: ideal for waves with little force, as it is designed to be standing at all times and you can move forward with it thanks to a flexible paddle. This surf type is becoming more important in recent years, daring to practice it even those who have no prior experience in this type of sport.
