It is not very common, but it does not hurt to create an article on this topic. Many of us go to the mountains for a day or a weekend, either for tourism or also combined with adventure activities such as hiking, canyoning, escalada etc.

Electrical storm in the mountains

Logically we will consult the weather forecast for those field days (nowadays it is almost certainly possible a few days before) but even so, there can always be evolutionary storms that come to surprise. That is why it is very important to follow these tips that we give you in case this phenomenon surprises us. It doesn't hurt to also take a look at these general safety tips if you are going to the mountain.

 Clouds approaching

That said, storms move quickly so take precautions if you hear thunder or see lightning.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET CAUGHT IN A STORM IN THE MOUNTAIN?

1. Alarm signal

If you see dark clouds approaching your position, turn on the alarm. Your body will react automatically to the approach of a storm, specifically lightning. Obvious signs that one is getting closer are:

Beautiful bristling in an electrical storm

- The hair is going to stand up - You will have a tingling sensation in your body
- If you carry any metal object in your backpack, it will make a buzzing sound

Given these warning signs, what you should never do is the following:

2. Don't run

Stay calm! By instinct, we all run away from any dangerous situation, but in this case, it is the worst thing you can do in a storm. With wet clothes, lightning is attracted to the turbulence we create in the air.

3. Do not take shelter under a solitary tree

 Storm in the tree

In any case, you should take refuge under a tree if it is in conjunction with others and is not the tallest, since a solitary one will act as a lightning rod.

4. Get rid of all metal material you carry and avoid getting close to them

 Electrical towers

Everyone knows that metal is a good conductor of electricity. Precisely for this reason it is necessary to deposit all our metal objects at a safe distance away from us. It is also important to stay away from metal constructions such as fences, pipes, electricity towers, wire fences, roads, machines...etc

5. Stay away from open areas

 Electrical storm plain

You can always be caught by a storm in an open area such as a meadow or a large plain, some crop, etc. If we have no other option, we must take the security position. To prevent lightning from hitting you on the ground, place yourself on an insulating material such as a backpack or coat, taking a fetal position with your feet together and hugging your knees. If you are in a group you should do the same thing but separated from each other approximately 20 meters.

6. Seek shelter

 Shelter for the storm

As a last option and to avoid any of the measures mentioned above, look for shelter. If you have time and something at hand, you should look for a safe shelter such as cars (with the windows closed), a stone shelter, a cable car, or something that will isolate you from the storm. Also a rock ledge, a cave, as long as there is one meter between the mountaineer's head and the ceiling. These are the best mountain refuges in the world.

That being said, I wish no one would ever use these tips, but prevention is better than cure and they will be here for when you need to refer to them.
