In these last two decades, many things, many people and many stories have happened around the Cantabrian Surf School. In this short story, we want to share with you in a chronological way a small summary of the experiences of its founders David (Capi) and Nacho García, and some of the things that have happened to the great family of the school.

ECS was born in 1991 without support but with things clear. Its founders wanted to teach everyone who wanted everything they knew about the world of surfing. That summer, with daily transfers from Santander to Somo, 20 people signed up. This is how what is today the most important surf school in Spain was born.

A year later, the Somo City Council gave them the old lifeguard hut. This would be its first headquarters. David and Nacho fought against all odds (pun intended) to prove that surfing did not have to be a self-taught sport. Little by little, the school grows: more students, new tables and a lot of enthusiasm. In 1995 the Costas law brought down its stand. It is David García (Capi) who gets a new place, right on the beach.

In 1996 the School began to be aware of its potential and trained several young promising Cantabrians. Juan Requivila, Marcos Dobarganes and Javi Espigares pass through there, who shortly after will be Spanish and regional champions. They create the Surf Team Escuela Cántabra de Surf, to compete in Spain. New additions to the team make ECS one of the most solvent schools in Spain. Rubén (the Californian) and Australian surfers join the team.

In 1999 they launched the I Open Championship, Cantabra Surf School, still alive and with enormous importance. Sponsors see a safe value in them. Their sweetest years begin, with expansions of facilities and with visits from surf legends Tom Curren, Jeff Hackman, Sofía Mulanovich, Megan Abubo and Chelsea Hedges... They are invited to collaborate in an Port Aventura, to participate in the documentary by Patxi Gabela Tsunami, new sponsors arrive... and in 2007 they decide to open the School all year round.

And not only that, they are in charge of giving life to Somo beach with the celebration of more and more activities. 2009 is an incredible year at the school, with the best team of monitors they had never had before. It is also a magical year that culminates with a training trip through the Canary Islands and then a Pura Vida through Costa Rica.

In 2010, David and Nacho culminate 20 years of history. "We consider ourselves privileged and in some way that "aloha" spirit is what we have always wanted to transmit. We are surfers from Somo, it is our town and we have always respected a positive localism, in which we transmit our knowledge to new surfers and so that they understand the respect, love and immense culture of surf that exists in our municipality, being the pioneer place of surfing in Spain.

Somo has changed a lot during these 20 years, just like we have. There are many things that have improved and others that have gotten worse... but it is still a unique and unrepeatable surfing destination and in addition to the large number and variety of waves it has, it is a magical place, where you can spend an unforgettable surfing vacation. /p>
