What qualification should I have to pilot a jet ski?
Until now, in order to be able to govern personal watercraft, it was mandatory to have one of the skipper or captain titles, whether it was the PNB, the PER, the > PY or the CY. And whenever this was not the case, you had to obtain or be in possession of one of the following nautical-sports qualifications:
- Motorcycle Pattern Nautical A. This qualification allowed you to pilot jet skis with power equal to or greater than 110hp.
- Jet Ski Pattern B. With this qualification you could handle jet skis with a power equal to or greater than 55 HP as long as you do not exceed 110 HP.
- Federal Authorization of Nautical Motorcycle Skipper C. This authorization entitled you to drive jet skis with power less than 55 HP.
In order to pass and obtain certification for these qualifications you had to pass some theoretical-practical tests and be over 18 years of age or, failing that, 16, presenting parental or child authorization. a legal guardian.
But, in the summer of 2024 this regulation will change and, to be able to control a jet ski, it will only be enough to have one of the following nautical qualifications:
- Navigation License
- Basic Navigation Pattern (PNB)
- Recreation Boat Skipper (PER)
- Yacht Skipper (PY)
- Yacht Captain (CY)
Nautical-sports teachings will be regulated by the Autonomous Communities as long as they have transferred the service functions in this type of subject. In the Communities that do not have the aforementioned transfers, the General Directorate of the Merchant Navy (DGMM) will be in charge of carrying out the relevant exams.
