Description of Kew Gardens

In the heart of the metropolis lies a natural paradise.

The Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew are the largest gardens of their kind in the whole world. In contrast to the surrounding streets of London, this is a place where nature comes to the fore. Home to over 30,000 varieties of plant from every corner of the world, including some of the rarest, and with a mission to use plant science to benefit the planet and humanity, it’s no surprise that the gardens have held the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003.

Kew Gardens cover a large area of the London Borough of Richmond equivalent to 132 hectares or 330 acres. Their size makes them one of the best places in the capital to escape the crush of the crowds, despite receiving over 2 million visitors every year.

The site is principally made up of open-air gardens and enclosed greenhouses. The highlight is perhaps the Temperate House, which preserves rare and endangered plant species from rainforest and jungle areas in perfect, stable conditions. As the largest surviving Victorian greenhouse in the world, it’s also an architectural wonder.

Other unique attractions include the 50-metre Great Pagoda, the Treetop Walkway, the Hive multi-sensory installation, Kew Palace, gushing fountains and a waterfall. There are also art galleries, spaces for children and families, cafes and restaurants and all the facilities needed to make your visit enjoyable.

To visit Kew Gardens is to walk through time, exploring the site that has developed since its establishment in 1840 to the present day, and space, taking in the sights and smells of the plant life of the planet in miniature.
